Australia is a cosmopolitan country which has grown up around a blend of different cultures from Asia, Europe, America and Africa. For this reason, the gastronomy of the country is also a blend of different spices and influences. Australian cooking itself is heavily influenced by Anglo Saxon cooking as a consequence of their colonization of the region. You can see this in the roast dinners, steaks, side dishes of vegetables, potatoes and puddings which are typically eaten. The most traditional dish is the meat pie, and fish is widely eaten in coastal regions.
In most Australian restaurants you can try local dishes, as well as recipes from other cultures and cuisines, in particular Asian food. Australia is a cosmopolitan country, and its restaurants, particularly in the big cities, reflect this cosmopolitanism. |
