Australia has thousands of kilometers of coastline and thousands of beaches for you to choose from. It is all at your fingertips when on holiday here. You can go swimming, diving, snorkelling, windsurfing, kitesurfing, sunbathe, fish and much much more! These are just a few of the many different activities you can participate in while visiting this marvellous paradise! In Australia several zones stand out above the rest. For example, the eastern zone where we find the most interesting beaches in the country; the exuberant city of Sydney; or the popular beaches of the Gold Coast. The beaches of the North are also very good, for example in Cairns, and the beaches of the Great Barrier Reef, with its tropical temperatures throughout the year. These beaches are ideal for enjoying the sunshine and doing activities such as diving.
It is important to bear safety in mind when you are enjoying the Australian coastline. Both the Indian Ocean to the West and the Pacific Ocean to the East are open seas; oceans where the dangers include the currents and the waves, and animals like sharks and jellyfish, especially at certain times of the year. For this reason, we recommend you to always look at the flag placed in the lifeguard tower on most urban beaches, and if you decide to go to an isolated beach, inform yourself of its safety conditions before entering the water. In Australia there is also a great tradition of bathing in lakes as well as in the sea.
Besides all this, don't forget Australia is one of the best places in the world for surfing, for diving, for swimming, for walking, sunbathing, and enjoying golden and white sands. There really is no excuse for not having the time of your life while on holiday in Australia!
The best beaches in Australia include Bondi, Byron Bay, the Gold Coast…those on the east coast, and the north coast where we find the Great Barrier Reef, as well as the beaches of Perth on the west coast.
In the northern areas, there are fantastic places to enjoy holidays; beaches which are at their best between April and November, and which offer many possible activities.
The main precautions to take on all of Australia's beaches.
- Jellyfish: Jellyfish are a real risk for those diving or snorkeling, because they tend to be in the deepest areas of water. The most dangerous time of the year is between October and May.
- Salt water crocodiles: From a distance, they are more dangerous than sharks. They are found at the mouths of some rivers and estuaries, very close to the sea. Ask for information before getting into the water in these areas.
-Sea urchins: These small crustaceans have very painful spikes. They collect in areas where the water is warmest. In these areas, it is advisable to wear flip flops in the water.
- Sharks: Shark attacks normally occur due to errors on the part of the animals. Sometimes they are confused and attack bathers, mistaking them for tuna or tortoises. Surfers are quite often victims of shark attacks. |
